Hackers Use iTunes Flaw to Rob PayPal Accounts

This week, we reported an iTunes vulnerability that exposes Windows users to over 40 different application attacks. Now, it seems that the same exploit is being used by hackers to infiltrate and drain PayPal accounts. "My account was charged over ... $4700. I called security at PayPal and was told a large number of iTunes store accounts were compromised," complained one customer in a recent post to blog TechCrunch. The same victim said he'd received almost fifty receipts from PayPal totaling $99.99 each, but was able to prevent these transactions from being recorded by his bank. Not everyone ... (view more)

Experts Warn: iTunes Flaw Puts Windows Users At Risk

Security researchers have found a new way to attack Windows: through Apple's very popular online media player and retailer iTunes. It involves a method of tricking the media player into performing a function that puts 40 different Windows ... applications at risk. The vulnerability stems from an issue with iTunes prior to Apple's releasing of version 9.1. This issue was associated with what was called a "Remote Binary Planting" flaw discovered by Slovenian research firm Acros. Security experts found that the vulnerability in the Windows version of iTunes allowed for local or remote hackers to ... (view more)

iTunes Hacked, Accounts Charged for Unauthorized Apps

Apple's iTunes Store has reportedly been hacked, with a developer named Thuat Nguyen using the opportunity to propel his own applications into 40 of the top 50 spots on the iTunes iBook section. The hack included unauthorized charges to hundreds, ... perhaps thousands of iTunes accounts. The story broke over tech blog TheNextWeb during the long weekend. Nguyen reportedly took advantage of a posted hack to the iTunes system and charged unsuspecting users for his own applications. The majority of these charges came for a set of books called Conan, Thuy Hu, and Vien Ngoc Rong, which all sell for $4. ... (view more)

'Sync Your iPod Without iTunes', and 'Prime95 26.1 Beta'

Sync Your iPod Without iTunes There has always been one universal constant for purchasers of an iPod -- that they would be using Apple's iTunes to sync it. Apple's iTunes has been downloaded millions of times and is adored by many, but what if ... you're looking for an alternative? http://www.makeuseof.com Prime95 26.1 Beta For overclockers, Prime95 has a feature called "Torture Test" that allows maximum stress testing on the CPU and RAM. There are several options allowing the stress test to focus on the memory, processor, or a balance of both. Usually Prime95 will detect an error ... (view more)

Apple Buys Up Music Streamer 'LaLa'

It appears Apple has gone ahead with plans to buy the rather unique music streaming service, named "LaLa." Some say the purchase could lead to big changes and, hopefully, improvements to the company's own iTunes service. LaLa has tested several ... different projects in the past, including CD swapping and radio, but in recent years has been known as a challenger to other popular music streamers like Pandora and Last.fm (frustratingly, like those other streamers it's also unavailable internationally). LaLa allows site members to create playlists of their own uploaded music and to allow ... (view more)

Apple Unveils HD Movies Via iTunes, Cheap

Just in case you aren't satisfied with downloading regular old standard definition movies from Apple's iTunes, keep your chin up: the Cupertino-based company is now offering HD flicks through its popular online store, and for pretty reasonable ... prices, too. For most of us eyeing Sony, Samsung, or Magnavox Blu-ray players, the problem thus far has been price. Most of those players range from $200 to $500 -- too much for the average movie fan even though the price has come down significantly since HD-DVD dropped off the face of the earth . In addition, Blu-ray movies are pretty steep themselves ... (view more)

Norway Pushes iTunes for DRM-free Music

Norway's leading consumer advocate wants to bring down Apple's "walled garden" between the iPod music player and the iTunes online retail store. Bjorn Erik Thon, Norway's consumer ombudsman, says he is going to ask the country's Market Council -- a ... court that has legal authority to make companies change their business practices -- to force Apple to allow competition within the iTunes-iPod ecosphere. (Source: guardian.co.uk ) Currently, Apple's iPod is the only portable device that can sync with iTunes and the iTunes store. Since its launch in 2003, The iTunes Store, Apple's online retail arm ... (view more)

Apple's App Store Policy Continues To Enrage

Apple has raised more controversy among iPhone users after refusing to 'stock' a podcast utility in the iTunes Apps store. Apple says the feature simply duplicates iTunes itself, but critics say the firm is embarrassed that an outside programmer has ... produced a better service. Alex Sokirynsky developed 'Podcaster' as a feature to help people download and listen to podcasts on their iPhones. He submitted it for distribution through the iTunes store in mid-August but Apple has now rejected the product. According to Sokirynsky, Apple told him "Since Podcaster assists in the distribution of ... (view more)

Apple Pulls Thousand Dollar iPhone Application

Apple has removed an unusual third-party product from iTunes: an iPhone screensaver costing $999.99. The product was listed by a developer named Armin Heinrich and sold through the iTunes Store's iPhones apps section, which allows people to buy ... add-ons for their phones. This particular product, named "I Am Rich", did nothing but display a glowing ruby on a phone's screen (though if you clicked on the ruby, it promised to display a mantra for success.) This wasn't a scam as such; Heinrich openly admitted it was useless in the product description, which read "The red icon on your iPhone or iPod ... (view more)

Napster Launches Legal but DRM-free Alternative to iTunes

According to reports, Napster has now launched what it describes as the world's "largest and most comprehensive MP3 store at www.napster.com/store ." Boasting a massive library and most importantly DRM-free music, the formerly illegal but now very ... law-abiding download site has an edge in its battle with online music retail goliath iTunes. Though its prices aren't drastically different than its major rival (songs are 99 cents each and just under ten bucks for MP3 albums), almost the entire Napster library is free of that wonderfully-frustrating DRM. For those that haven't heard, DRM (Digital ... (view more)
