Use Yahoo email with Outlook Express (free)?
Infopackets Reader Janice C. writes:
" Dear Dennis,
I use Outlook Express as my primary email program. I also use Yahoo email via my web browser for a secondary email account (mostly to subscribe to free online draws, lotto's, etc). If possible, I'd like to hook up my Yahoo email address into Outlook Express. I've tried to add my yahoo email address into Outlook Express, but it doesn't work. Can you please tell me how to this? "
My response:
I've answered this question before (but it's worth going over once more).
In a nutshell, Outlook Express only supports POP3 and IMAP mail server protocols. The web version of Yahoo email doesn't use POP3 email protocol because it operates over the browser. If you want to use POP3, you can:
1. Sign up for a free service offered by Yahoo which allows you to use POP3 protocol with any email client. In order to subscribe to the free POP3 service offered by Yahoo, you will also have to agree to receive advertisements from Yahoo "partners" in your email box.
2. Sign up for Yahoo premium service. The cost is $19.99 a year and you won't get the ads. More info here.
3. Use YahooPOPs! ("YPOPs!"): a third party application that converts web-based Yahoo email into POP3 format. This enables you to download your Yahoo emails into Outlook Express, Eudora, Pegasus, or any other POP3-compatible email program. From the sourceForge.com web site:
" YPOPs! is an application that provides POP3 access to Yahoo! Mail. It is available for Windows, Linux, Solaris and Mac platforms ... this application emulates a POP3 server and enables popular email clients like Outlook, Netscape, Eudora, Mozilla, etc., to download email from Yahoo! email accounts ... Please read and follow the appropriate instructions in the Configuring Mail Clients, FAQ, and the sticky FAQ at the top of the YPOPs! Windows forum before posting in the forum, as the most common issues are addressed there. "
