Second Facebook Search Box Likely Malware

A myriad of different brand-specific search boxes have been embedded in the most popular social media and entertainment websites in recent years, so it should come as little surprise that one of the most popular social networks, Facebook, would decide to implement one on their main page as well.

But the company is bewildered by the latest presence of a second search box, dubbed "Search the Web", which is leading many to believe that the feature could potentially lead to the spread of malware.

Facebook news blog AllFacebook was the first to report on the issue, after a number of users noted seeing a second, unfamiliar search box appear next to the legitimate Facebook search engine. The second engine is said to appear so perfectly integrated into the Facebook layout that first time users, or anyone else not paying close attention, would likely be duped. (Source: pcworld.com)

No Plans to Test Suspicious Search Box

Facebook is echoing the sentiments of those who claim that 'Search the Web' is a telltale sign that something is amiss. However, the company has no plans to test the suspicious search box to know for certain.

In a statement made to technology news blog Search Engine Land, a Facebook official stated, "We are not testing the placement of a separate web search field and have no plans to do so. We believe that the second search field or 'Search the Web' box appeared on peoples' accounts as the result of unknown actions by a third party targeting the browser." (Source: yahoo.com)

Source of Search Box Unknown

Situations involving viruses and malware are nothing new to Facebook who, given their mass appeal, are in a constant battle against hackers and online scammers.

Still, at this point, it is unclear whether or not 'Search the Web' is the act of an external malware exploit or a rogue Facebook application.
