How to Fix: KB4522355 Won't Install (Win10 1903)
Infopackets Reader Samuel P. writes:
" Dear Dennis,
I have two Windows 10 Pro machines, currently running Windows 10 1903. Both machines can't install KB4522355 (released October 24, 2019). This update would bring me to OS Build 18362.449. When I go to PC Settings -> Update and Security, it tells me that KB4522355 is pending, and when I click 'download and install', it tries to install but then fails repeatedly. I've tried clearing my Windows Update queue per your instructions but KB4522355 won't install. Can you please help? "
My response:
I asked Samuel if he would like me to connect to his machine using my remote desktop support service in order to have a closer look at the problem, and he agreed.
Below I will discuss my findings.
How to Fix: Can't Install KB4522355 (Win10 1903)
Usually resetting the software distribution directory is enough to most Windows updates that have problems installing, but in this case KB4522355 is seemingly very stubborn.
When the software distribution directory reset doesn't work, the alternate method is to use the Windows Update Catalog to download and install the update. This effectively bypasses using the Windows Update method of installing the update, and instead uses a self-executing downloaded .cab file.
In this case, using the Windows Update catalog to install KB4522355 is what worked for me.
To do so:
- Visit the Windows Update catalog and select the appropriate
KB4522355 download
which applies to your system. Alternatively you can click the links here:
KB4522355
Windows 10 64-bit; for
KB452235 Windows 10 32-bit.
- Once the download completes, execute the KB4522355 .cab file.
- KB4522355 should now begin installing on your system, and it should complete and will likely require a reboot.
Is KB4522355 Still Failing to Install?
Please note that if your Windows Update or Windows itself is corrupt, the method I described above may fail.
One way to measure whether or not your Windows Update is corrupt is to go to PC Settings -> Update and Security -> Windows Update History. If you see a lot of failed updates, that would indicate there is a significant issue that needs to be addressed (much deeper than what is described in this article). In this case you are welcome to contact me for additional support, described next.
