Google Makes Bold Chrome Claims

Google says its latest browser update is "the largest gain in Chrome performance in years." It claims the browser will now be significantly faster, drain less battery and be more useful. Unlike many software updates, the majority of the changes in ... the latest version of Chrome are behind the scenes and affect performance rather than add new features. For example, Chrome will now devote more resources to "active tabs" (the ones that have most recently been used) rather than give the same attention to every open tab. It says on average this will reduce CPU usage by "five times" and add an extra ... (view more)

Chrome to 'Freeze' Unused Tabs, Reduce RAM Usage

Google is introducing more options to deal with the Chrome browser using too much computer memory. It's implementing less severe options for users with multiple tabs open. The way Chrome was originally designed means every open tab uses up computer ... memory (RAM). That can mount up substantially if you are accustomed to having many tabs opened when Chrome is launched, or even with Chrome is idle. In turn this will significantly slow the computer down on older systems that don't have enough RAM to begin with. Since 2015 Chrome has had a feature called "Tab Discarding" that kicks in ... (view more)

Firefox 57 to Kill Many Addons: Tab Groups Alternative

Infopackets Reader Jean K. writes: " Dear Dennis, Recently my Firefox web browser updated to version 56.0.2. When I go Tools -> Add-ons , I see most of my addons are marked as ' Legacy '. I read online that when Firefox 57 is released, it will ... use ' web extensions ,' (also spelt " WebExtensions ") which will make the current addons incompatible. This is a big problem! I have been using the ' Tab Groups ' addon by Quicksaver for a while now (which groups my web browser tabs into categories) and cannot imagine life without this incredibly helpful addon. Unfortunately the developer ... (view more)

Use Word's Tabs Dialog Box To Set Multiple Tabs

You can use the ruler in Word to easily set tabs exactly where you need them, which is what I almost always use. It may be easier sometimes though, to use the Tabs dialog box if you find that you need to set leader tabs, which you cannot apply on ... the ruler. Suppose you need to set two left tab stops at 1.5" and 3.5" from the left margin and a right leader tab stop 5" from the left margin. I will show you how to set them all at one time! Follow the steps below: Position your cursor where you want the tabs to be set. Click Format | Tabs. In Word 2007, click Page Layout tab | ... (view more)

Precise Tab Positioning on the Ruler Bar in MS Word

When you tab in MS Word you will notice that the default tab is set to 0.5 inches. You do have some leeway in changing your tab settings though. You can set your tabs by following the steps below: Click on Format | Tabs. Set your tab stops. Click ... Close. You can pretty much set your tabs the way you want using this method, without having to keep hitting 'tab' to get where you want to be. Having said that, you really do not have precise control of your tabs. That is to say, you cannot decide and set your tabs with a precise measurement. There is one way that I have found where you can achieve ... (view more)
