TeMerc Internet Countermeasures

Infopackets Reader Tom 'TeMerc' writes: " Dear Dennis, Regarding a recent inquiry about Spyware in your March 17, 2005 newsletter : one of the members of my forum pointed me towards your web site. Indeed the instructions you provided for removing ... Spyware are generic enough to apply to just about any Spyware application (toolbar or otherwise). Spyware won't remove and keeps coming back!

Infopackets Reader Jim L. writes: " Dear Dennis, Please Help! I have apparently acquired some kind of virus (or Spyware) on my computer. I scanned my computer using AdAware and Spy Sweeper in hopes of resolving the issue; AdAware (downloaded the ... latest 'free' version) refuses to delete or quarantine any of the detected programs, and eventually locks up -- preventing me from even closing it down. Spy Sweeper continuously pops up a window telling me if I want to remove the detected Spyware, even after I click on 'remove'. One of the filenames is iekw32.exe, and another one was ipna.exe. It ... (view more)

System Restore and similar Registry Reverting utilities -- pointless?

Infopackets Reader Helen H. writes: " Dear Dennis, I recently installed Norton System Works 2005, and now my computer is reporting that System Restore for Windows XP will not complete the restore process. It says, 'System Restore Incomplete.' Can ... you tell me if the Norton antivirus is interfering with the restore program? If so what to I need to do to correct the problem? " My response: Personally, I don't use Norton System Works 2005, so I can only speculate on your situation. Use more than one Virus Scanner at same time?

Infopackets Reader Richard D. writes: " Dear Dennis, I've read on some web sites that people are using more than one Spyware scanner on their systems for an added layer of protection. In a similar respect, is it safe to run two virus protection ... programs at once? Can there be any conflicts? " My response: Both Spyware and Virus scanners operate using the same type of mechanism: a database of 'signatures', which are used to recognize infected or suspicious files on your system. The reason why some people choose to scan their systems twice is simply because not all Spyware databases ... (view more)

XoftSpy Spyware Tool: Legitimate or Scam?

Infopackets Reader Diane D. writes: " Dear Dennis, I recently found a program called 'XoftSpy' while browsing the 'net. The web site offered a free download to check my PC, so I tried it.
