Hardware Hacker Creates PS3, Xbox 360 Hybrid

A video game hardware modifier ("modder") has successfully blended a Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) with a Microsoft Xbox 360, this gaming generation's most powerful consoles. For gamers, it's a momentous event that was also a long time coming. In the ... realm of sports, there are some very notable rivalries: Celtics and Bulls, Yankees and Red Sox, Canadiens and Bruins. In the gaming world, the most hateful of all rivalries is between fans (or "fanboys," as they're called) of Sony's PS3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360. Both will point to exclusive titles (like Uncharted for PS3 or Gears ... (view more)

PSN Outage Leads to PS3 Sales Slide

According to recent reports, sales of the Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) video game console slipped considerably following the hacking of the PlayStation Network (PSN) . Sources say many retailers are finding consumers trading in their PS3s for Xbox 360s, ... a console built by industry rival, Microsoft. "[With just a few] days into the month and already we have an increase of 200% in PS3s coming into the store compared to all of March," said Tom Mestdagh, a representative for Belgian video game retailer, Gameswap. "Normally we sell them really fast, but not this time." (Source: gamepro.com ) Pre- ... (view more)

Massive System Error Cripples Most PS3s

Earlier this week, hundreds of thousands of Sony PlayStation 3 consoles couldn't connect to the PlayStation online gaming network, PSN. Even worse, many machines couldn't even play disc-based games, online or off. The problem appears to have been ... tied to an apparently unforeseen error whereby the system clock reverted to 12/31/99. As of this March 2nd, however, the problem appears to have been resolved. Sony says the issue was related to some machines recognizing 2010 as a leap year, all but completely crashing systems when the clock shifted to February 29, 2010. Once the date moved on to ... (view more)

Sony Emulates Nintendo's Wii with New Controller

It's a topic that has long been debated by video game aficionados all over the world: which features make for a better system: the pristine graphics of the Sony PlayStation 3 or the motion-sensitive game play of the Nintendo Wii? If Sony is ... successful in patenting their new controller concept, they just may be able to sway undecided consumers towards the PS3. If you can't beat them, join them! The idea will be to stray away from the traditional "Dual Shock" solid controller, opting instead to introduce a controller that resembles two ice-cream cones attached side-by-side. The controllers ... (view more)

Sony Re-Releases Old Classic

Fans of the Sony PlayStation 3 had a rough time of it when the console launched in November 2006. Pounded in sales by Nintendo and overshadowed by the game library of the Xbox 360, few Sony fanboys could legitimately 'sell' the system for gamers. ... Now, that may be changing as the console regains a critical feature once thought lost forever. When it first shipped well over a year ago, the PS3 lacked a small but important little trick that many gamers enjoyed: rumble. Part of the reason, as claimed by Sony, was that the PS3's new controller function, SIXAXIS, would be impaired by the vibrations ... (view more)

Pundits Ponder Another Holiday Console War

Last year there were few hotter items than the world's newest video game consoles, the Sony PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii. Both launched in November, both were highly anticipated, and both instigated massive line-ups that inevitably led to some ... profane language and marked frustration. This year, the dynamics of the console war have certainly changed. It may surprise our readers to hear that many gaming critics are now predicting a big season for Sony. For the last year, the PlayStation 3 has been stuck in a distant third position behind Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii, despite real ... (view more)

Is the PS3 Finally Worth Buying?

According to PC World game expert Matt Peckham, it's about time we all got on board and bought a PlayStation 3. After one heck of a miserable year, it seems Sony finally has something going with its big black console. So, what's the reason to jump ... on board now? Price, of course. Although Sony's PS3 once retailed for an astronomical $600, it will soon be available (with 20GB less storage, mind you), for $400. That's the result of yet another price drop coming Friday, November 2. For the record, Sony's 80GB model will also drop in price, from the lofty $600 to $500. Study Predicts Wii Won't Stop

What kind of console do you own? Perhaps more importantly, is there a particular gaming system you plan to own in the next six to twelve months? A recent study on that very question has come to a conclusion some might consider quite controversial. ... Since its debut last November, the Nintendo Wii, which uses fan-dangled motion-sensitivity for much of its gameplay, has dominated the competition. Although the Xbox 360 from Microsoft still holds a sales lead, that's primarily because of its year-long head start. The Sony PlayStation 3, well, the PS3 ain't doin' too good. But, what about the next ... (view more)

Blu-ray Price Cuts Open Up PlayStation Speculation

The Sony PlayStation 3, thus far, has been a failure. Outsold five to one in Japan by the Nintendo Wii and trailing the Xbox 360 in North America, the big black console has largely lost the gaming throne it inherited from its ancestor, the ... PlayStation 2. Much of the PS3's current condition is a result of Sony's high price point, with consumers forced to bone up $599 for the feature-laden system. Hopes, however, are now rising, ever so faintly. That's because Sony has recently dropped the price of its Blu-ray player, and it could mean similar reductions to the PlayStation 3. Gamer Gives up PS3 for High End PC

It's no secret that the PC gaming market has been losing ground to video game consoles for years. Standalone game systems are significantly cheaper and they're incredibly easy to get up and running -- simply plug and play. Let's face it: playing ... games on a computer can be a pain. Addled users who just want to twiddle their joysticks for a couple of hours (or tap on their keyboard and mouse, as the case may be) suddenly have to worry about whether they have the right graphics card and sound chip, enough speed and memory, or any other number of frustrating variables. Perhaps that is what PC ... (view more)
