iPhone 'Jailbreaking' and Unofficial Apps Now Legal

A change to copyright laws mean cellphone owners can now legally "jailbreak" their phones. Jailbreaking, as it is often referred to, is the practice which involves modifying a device (such as an iPhone) to run any software, regardless of ... manufacturer restrictions. The decision affects the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), a legislation that has made it illegal to bypass any electronic restrictions designed to protect copyright. The act was most prominently cited in a case involving software which allowed users to copy digitally protected DVDs. The Electronic Frontier Foundation, or EFF ... (view more)

iPhone 4 as Sour as Windows Vista, Equates MS Exec

Microsoft recently took full advantage when given the opportunity to criticize longtime rival Apple about its iPhone 4. To their credit, however, Microsoft ended up offering some self-depreciating humor in the process. "It looks like the iPhone 4 ... might be [Apple's Windows Vista], and I'm OK with that," said Kevin Turner, Microsoft's Chief Operating Officer (COO) during their Worldwide Partner Conference held in Washington. (Source: thestreet.com ) It was only five years ago that Windows Vista was pegged as Microsoft's most comprehensive operating system (OS) to date, yet it soon fell out of ... (view more)

Apple Declares iPhone 4 Signals 'Totally Wrong'

While the Applie iPhone 4 has sold tremendously well, its launch has been mired by complaints of poor signal reception. It's been widely assumed this was due to the fact the new model is designed so that the antenna actually forms the perimeter of ... the handset itself. It appears that the hand, particularly if touching the bottom of the left hand edge of the phone, reduces the signal. One theory is that it isn't the physical blocking which is the issue, but rather than some of the energy in the signal is absorbed by the hand in the form of heat. Apple Overtakes Microsoft As Biggest Tech Firm

This week marked a historic, albeit merely symbolic moment in technology history. For the first time, Apple is worth more than Microsoft. The statistic in question is the market capitalization of the two companies, namely the current stock price ... multiplied by the number of shares. In theory it's the price you'd have to pay to take over the company -- though in reality, either the sellers or buyers controlling the deal would ultimately affect the takeover price. As of the end of trading on Wednesday, Apple's value was $222 billion, overtaking Microsoft's $219 billion. As well as taking the top ... (view more)

Adobe Rebuttal Fires Back: Apple Claims Unwarranted

Adobe has issued a rebuttal in relation to recent comments made Apple CEO Steve Jobs, calling them nothing more than "smokescreens". In a blog last week, Jobs hurled a number of allegations against Adobe (and more specifically, their Flash product) ... claiming that iPhone and iPad users were better off without it. Initially, Adobe appeared to be taking the high road. In an early follow-up statement, President and CEO Shantanu Narayen stated that Adobe would be "committed to bringing Flash to any platform of which there is a screen". For all intents and purposes, Adobe seemed to be following the ... (view more)
