CLCL: a Powerful Clipboard Manager
Working at a computer can be very distracting.
I've read that most people only stay focused on a task for an average of six minutes while using a PC. Personally, I get distracted even more than that! And this is especially true whenever I'm cutting and pasting things from the web. Often times I copy a graphic into the clipboard, get distracted for awhile, and then overwrite the clipboard with something else. Fortunately, I've managed to find a solution to this dilemma.
CLCL is a clipboard manager, or more aptly put: a clipboard extender. It keeps a history of the most recent items copied into the Windows clipboard, and makes it easy to review the items for later use.
Using CLCL on My PC
Once CLCL is launched, a small paper clip icon will appear in the Windows system tray. Right clicking on the icon will bring up a list of recent clips; left clicking on it will bring up the CLCL control panel so that you can organize clippings and customize the program to fit your needs.
There are so many features in CLCL that I could write a small book explaining them! The feature that I use most is CLCL's ability to save often used clips in a permanent "Template" section. Once you have right clicked on a recent clip and saved it into the Template area, you can go there and right click on it again to rename it.
Here's a rundown on CLCL's features:
- All clipboard formats are supported
- Templates can be registered
- Pop-up menu is displayed by "Alt+C"
- Menu can be customized
- Item is paste automatically
- Picture is displayed on a menu
- Tool tip is displayed on a menu
- The format to leave and the format to save can be set up
- The ignored window can be set up
- The paste key for every window can be set up
- Function is extensible with plug-in
- Freeware
CLCL is a very small download at less than 200k. It's available as a zip archive and a self-extracting zip. The installation is not automatic, but all you have to do is unzip it to a folder. To get the full use of CLCL's power, you should place a shortcut to the program in your Windows Startup folder so that it launches every time Windows starts up.
If you don't already have a clipboard extender, I recommend that you try out CLCL. I think you'll discover that it's one of those "must have" tools!
