The Pirate Bay Spin-Off Site Blocked by ISPs
A recent spin-off of the notorious The Pirate Bay website has been blocked by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the United Kingdom. Its owners are upset because, unlike The Pirate Bay, the new site is reportedly not breaking any laws.
'The Promo Bay' is the name of the website spun-off from the Sweden-based 'The Pirate Bay' file sharing website which for years has allegedly facilitated the illegal sharing of copyright-protected media files.
Blocked Site Gave Indie Artists a Voice
The Promo Bay, however, was created to help promote the work of indie musicians, artists, and filmmakers. Unlike The Pirate Bay, it doesn't appear to allow visitors to engage in copyright infringement.
Instead, The Promo Bay was launched by The Pirate Bay's management to help popularize the names of relatively unknown artists. Accessing The Pirate Bay's very active online community is a key part of this very legal process. (Source: torrentfreak.com)
According to The Promo Bay's spokesperson, Will Dayble, the indie artists on the site "are coming from the point of view that free, mass exposure -- with smart measurement on who likes you where -- is more valuable to an artist than trying to scrape money out of iTunes or Beatport or whatever."
The Pirate Bay reportedly received thousands of requests from various artists eager to participate in the project. (Source: digitaltrends.com)
The Promo Bay Guilty by Association?
Many experts say they are stumped by the decision of British ISPs to block access to The Promo Bay. Some insiders believe there's either more to The Promo Bay than it appears, or that the ISPs have found the site guilty by association with The Pirate Bay.
Dayble says only the latter assessment is accurate.
"These providers are pretty monolithic and old school," says Dayble. "I'd imagine it's just a broad-scale block against a bunch of Pirate Bay properties and we fell under the net. I doubt it's a pointed move against the Promo Bay in particular." (Source: digitaltrends.com)
The Promo Bay's founders say they hope the mistake will be recognized soon and that British ISPs will stop blocking access to their site.
