Apple's RED iPod to Benefit AIDS Charity
Apple announced last Friday that it would be teaming up with U2 front man, Bono, in offering a special RED edition of the iPod nano to benefit the singer's charity. RED, the name of Bono's charity, supports fighting diseases in Africa, especially AIDS. (Source: betanews.com)
The special-edition bright red iPod nano acts as a part of a large corporation-rock star campaign to raise funds and awareness for the fight against AIDS in Africa.
In some Southern African countries, the national adult HIV prevalence rate has risen higher than initially thought possible. In Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe, over 20% of adults are infected with HIV or AIDS. (Source: avert.org)
For every RED nano that is sold, Apple will donate $10 to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
The special-edition nano comes enclosed in red case and has 4 GB of storage space and can hold 1000 songs. The "Red" nano will sell for $199. (Source: mercurynews.com)
Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, points out the benefits of the special-edition iPod: "now customers can buy the best music player in the world and do something to help the world at the same time...We're honored to work with Bono, (RED) and this team to contribute to an incredibly important initiative and help change the way people think about AIDS in Africa." In addition to donating part of the proceeds from the RED iPod nano, Apple will also begin to sell a special iTunes RED $25 gift card next month, which 10 percent of the proceeds will be donated to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
