PC Bug Doctor scam?

" Dear Dennis,

I just read your article on the free Spyware scanning software, 'XoftSPy'. It reminded me of a similar experience I had with a program called PC Bug Doctor. The PC Bug Doctor web site promised to scan and repair 'every error on your Computer anytime you need it.' I admit, I was a bit skeptical, but figured it would be worth a shot.

Boy was I wrong!

Although the program reported over 200 errors on my computer, I had to register it in order to fix them ($40). Mind you, I would have gladly paid the registration fee if I knew what the errors were and if I was sure PC Bug Doctor would fix them. Subsequently, I decided to see what others were saying about the program and found nothing but bad reviews and warnings to stay away from the 'scam'. Long story short: I ended up purchasing Registry Mechanic to fix the errors (which, by the way, found even more errors and at least provided me with some details). PS: Thanks very much for your articles. They are very informative and have helped me in a number of ways. Kudos to you! "

My response:

Well said, and notably so: if you ever suspect a program may not be what it appears, it's always a good idea to spend a little time doing research to see what others are saying about the product and company in question.

The claim that PC Bug Doctor can "fix every error on your computer any time you need it" is simply outrageous and a complete falsehood, as noted on their web site.

There are in fact a number of Registry Fixers and Spyware Removal tools on the market (freeware and payware), but even fewer that are legitimate -- especially in the sense that they actually do something to fix your computer or make it run smoother.

I agree wholeheartedly with you that WinGuides Registry Mechanic is a reputable program. And although the free scan will repair only the first six sections of the main screen (registration required to repair all), Registry Mechanic is one of the few cleaners on the market that actually delivers what it promises. Comparably, user reviews on download.com rated PC Bug Doctor with a 78% disapproval (45 votes), while Registry Mechanic 3 was ranked at the opposite side of the spectrum (75% approval with 451 votes).

In-depth review on Registry Mechanic and Comments from Readers

In late August, I compiled and in-depth review on Registry Mechanic, and you can read that here (includes link to download). After writing the review, I received a number of comments from Readers with their take (read it here).
