Yahoo! Concedes to Google

In a recent interview, Yahoo! CFO Susan Decker made some interesting statements about Yahoo!'s position as a search company. She said: " We don't think it's reasonable to assume we're going to gain a lot of share from Google. It's not our goal to be ... No. 1 in Internet search. We would be very happy to maintain our market share. We have held our own, and we should gain revenue share in the industry as we roll out these new initiatives. Our goal has been to hold our share and to be a leading, if not the leading, total marketing platform, which would include both brand and search. " ( ... (view more)

From your Friends at Google

I've only been awake for a few hours, and the day just keeps getting better. At around 10 o'clock in the morning, UPS delivered my 24" LCD Flat Screen monitor ( model 2405FPW ) direct from Dell Canada. I've been waiting -- and waiting! -- for it to ... go on sale. And it was by a complete stroke of luck that I happened to see it at 20% off the retail price! I saved almost $300! I couldn't have been happier than a pig wallowing in its own poop. And if that wasn't a good enough reason to leap out of bed on a cold winter's day, a DHL courier showed up at my door a few hours later with another ... (view more)

Google Adsense and Infopackets

Infopackets Reader Phil C. write s: " Dear Dennis, I have been a long time subscriber to your online magazine (since early 2002) and have found your articles to be both informative and especially easy to read. And, although, I admit I don't have ... time to read all of your articles, there always seems to be an issue you've covered (more often than not) that deals with similar computing problems that I face on a day-to-day basis. For that, I am deeply gratified. I'm writing you today with regard to some of the changes you've made to the site. I like the new layout (especially the links to ... (view more)

'Major' Critical Updates released from Microsoft: July, 2004

Over the last 2 weeks, Microsoft has issued a number of patches related to exploits recently discovered in Internet Explorer. Today, I received 2 additional notifications: one of them listed as critical and, if not applied immediately, may allow ... "remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a malicious website or JOB file." (Source: cve.mitre.org ) Yikes! This section of the Gazette is normally dedicated to answering questions I receive from Readers between the time that newsletters are sent out; however, this time, I feel it is imperative to inform Readers of the importance of ... (view more)

Google attacked

Infopackets.com isn't the only web server under attack from hackers as of late . " Several major web sites, including Yahoo, Microsoft and Google, were inaccessible at times early [Tuesday (06/15/2004), due to an online attack]. The problem began ... about 9 a.m. Eastern and lasted less than two hours, said Jeff Young, a spokesperson for Akamai Technologies Inc., whose network of servers mirror some of the Web's top destinations to improve their performance. " (1) Akamai Technologies later confirmed that its network and servers came under 'a sophisticated, large-scale attack' as a ... (view more)

Microsoft Trust, Antitrust and the Antichrist

Do you trust Microsoft? Is Bill Gates the Antichrist? While a new computer user may not know a thing or two about Microsoft, its trustworthy practices, Bill Gates, and the Windows operating system -- the usual response from most experienced computer ... users is: "no way," and "yes!" I guess the first thing that comes to my mind regarding antitrust and Microsoft is the Netscape scandal: most people refer to it as the browser war . I suppose this antitrust scandal is most pertinent because of all the media attention it received at the time. It pretty much set the wave for other ... (view more)
