Nintendo Thanksgiving Sales Drop; Developer Cites Software

Thanksgiving weekend proved a huge success for many retailers, particularly those with web sites -- Amazon.com and Wal-Mart.com cleaned up on both Black Friday and Cyber Monday, as techies proved unwilling to brace the long lines and nasty parking ... lot traffic jams. Unfortunately, not everyone fared well this past weekend, including previous holiday season heavyweight, Nintendo. Nintendo Console Sales Dip 31% Nintendo's problem is its Wii console, which between Christmas 2006 and Christmas 2008 virtually swept aside all other toys and tech devices in stocking-stuffer popularity. However, it ... (view more)

Nintendo Profits Plummet 52%; Game Maker Rips Wii

For the first time since its release three years ago, the Nintendo Wii appears to be slipping up. Nintendo, which has for the past three holiday seasons stolen the spotlight from competitors Microsoft and Sony, recently cut its forecast for the tiny ... white and previously uber-popular console. 52 Percent Decline In Q4 In a statement released late last week, Nintendo admitted an astounding 52 percent decline in profit for the last quarter. As a result, the company decided it must cut its operating profit forecast for the year to March 2010 by a quarter, to 370 billion yen, or $4.7 billion USD. ... (view more)

Leaked Ad Suggests Nintendo Wii Price Drop

It hasn't been long since Microsoft dropped the price of its Xbox 360 console in anticipation of a hectic holiday season, and now rumors are circulating that Nintendo may be ready to lower the price tag on its super-popular Wii. It's only been a few ... weeks since Microsoft slashed the price of its high-end Xbox 360, the Elite, from $399 to just $299. That's a big drop for a console that has more or less wrapped up second place in the U.S. console sales chart, with most purchases being made by hardcore players impressed with the Xbox 360's second-to-none online Xbox Live network, its long list ... (view more)

Nintendo Passes Another Impressive Landmark

The good news for Nintendo just keeps on coming. Earlier this year, we reported that the company's Wii console fueled record sales for the video game industry; today, another impressive stat: the Wii has sold one million units in Canada, a country ... whose total population was last marked at just over 33 million. Despite being late out of the gate (a couple weeks after Sony's PlayStation 3 in November, 2006 and a year behind Microsoft's Xbox 360), the Wii has completely hammered the sales of its two primary competitors. Actual figures for Nintendo's console north of the border sit around 1,060, ... (view more)

Nintendo: 'Wii Won't Cut Prices'

Nintendo's Wii recently hit the 25 million units sold mark, and there's no indication the little white console is about to slow down any day soon. At least, that's the reason Nintendo has announced it will not be reducing the price of its popular ... system. To some, the announcement is a surprise, given that most consoles knock at least a small percentage of their price tag off sometime around one year after launch. By comparison, Sony's PlayStation 3 reduced its price almost immediately, and the Microsoft Xbox 360 has seen its price slashed numerous times since its November 2005 release. ... (view more)

Microsoft: 'We Want Wiimote'

We've all said it before, and this time I'll say it again -- if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. That's the phrase of the day for Microsoft, which appears to be developing its own 'Wiimote' for the Xbox 360. Thought it will undoubtedly raise the ire of ... Nintendo's ever-growing fanboy community, Microsoft's decision to launch a motion-sensitive controller with the likeness of the Wii's tiny remote makes perfect sense. Nintendo has long overtaken Microsoft in the console race, though the Xbox 360 still boasts an unmatched games library. Add some Wii to the equation -- ripped off or not -- and all ... (view more)

Nintendo Credits American Par-tay for Wii Success

Not sure why the Nintendo Wii is Super Smashing its competition from Microsoft and Sony these days? In a recent interview with online game magazine Gamespot, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata attributed all that success -- in the good 'ol US of A, at ... least -- to an American penchant for the house party. Last year, Nintendo sold a staggering six million units of its popular Wii console. Released in November of 2006, the tiny white machine has surpassed just about everyone's expectations; with simple, 'fun' games based on motion-sensitive technology, the console has appealed to 'casual' gamers ... (view more)

Christmas Morning Marred by Grumbles, Groans

Many of us have simply accepted that the holiday season's hottest Christmas gifts are often hard to find. In some ways, that makes up about half of their appeal. However, for the two companies behind this season's most in-demand items, customer ... complaints are beginning to mount. Could it even affect their post-Christmas sales? Few of us are new to the Nintendo Wii shortage. Even those that haven't much interest in owning the cutesy little console -- myself included -- it's no secret that the device is very hard to get, and has been for a remarkable amount of time. In fact, finding the Wii has ... (view more)

Game Exec Calls for Cheaper Consoles

Scared off video game consoles because of their price? Many casual fans are, and until Microsoft and Sony can knock some buckaroos off the bottom line, many critics believe the industry will only play a tertiary media role. But, is that about to ... change? According to Activision executive Bobby Kotick, it just might. Kotick, a key player for one of the video game industry's most prominent and long-standing publishers, recently stated that he expects consoles to sell for under $200 before Christmas, 2009. (Source: gameinformer.com ) Why? To bring in the mass-market. Hey, it's worked for Nintendo ... (view more)
