iPad 2 Expected to be Unveiled March 2
Apple has set aside March 2nd, 2011 for a major media event, where it's expected the Cupertino, California-based company will unveil a totally new iPad. (Source: mercurynews.com)
iPad2: Thinner, Lighter Body Likely
What we don't know, however, is when the device itself will ship. It's hoped that will be one of the points of discussion at the upcoming media event, along with reasons why consumers should be bothered to purchase an iPad 2. Experts speculate that the new iPad will feature a thinner and lighter design, more memory, and a front-facing camera.
These features seem a lock, but insiders continue to debate as to whether or not iPad 2 will feature a Retina Display function (for increased security) or a higher-resolution screen. Stunning resolution numbers like 2,048 by 1,536 have been thrown around, but it's unclear if the technology necessary will be ready for iPad 2 or iPad 3. IDC research manager Tom Mainelli maintains that these kinds of resolutions probably won't be seen on an iPad in 2011.
Jobs' Health Again to be the Focus
The March 2 event will almost certainly be about more than just the iPad 2. It's not known whether Apple CEO Steve Jobs will be on hand to push the new device, a role he's known for.
Steve Jobs recently left his lofty post for unspecified health issues, and since that time speculation has run rampant as to the extent of his illness. Last week the Apple exec was sighted at a dinner with President Barack Obama and only photographed from behind, leading to some speculation that his appearance was intentionally hidden.
In the meantime, Jobs is confident his COO, Tim Cook, can handle events like an iPad 2 unveiling.
"I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011," Jobs wrote in his January 17 departing email. "I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can." (Source: eweek.com)
