Apple's iPhone Now on Wal-Mart Shelves
As of this past Sunday, Wal-Mart has commenced selling Apple's iPhone 3G in approximately 2,500 of its stores. With two models available for consumers, one of which is under $200, Apple should expect a big boost in sales.
Wal-Mart's two iPhone versions include an 8 GB edition and a 16 GB model. The smaller version is available for a reasonable $197, while the larger iPhone retails for $297. Tech fans will remember that when the 8 GB originally went on sale in June of last year, it cost the average consumer about $599.
In a statement last week, Wal-Mart revealed that every phone sold within its stores would require a two-year service agreement. (Source: cnet.com)
Clearly, Wal-Mart recognizes the benefits of an even closer relationship with Apple. The retailer already sells Apple's entire line of iPod digital audio devices.
"We are delighted to bring customers this ground-breaking mobile technology," gushed Gary Severson, senior VP of Wal-Mart entertainment. "Our electronics associates have been preparing for many weeks for the arrival of iPhone 3G. We are excited to now help new customers learn more about the features and services that make the iPhone unique." (Source: eweek.com)
Unfortunately, there's no sign of the rumored $99 edition of the iPhone. Several weeks ago we reported that many insiders had predicted an ultra-low-cost 4 GB version of the iPhone for an ultra-low-cost retailer like Wal-Mart. However, it seems CNBC -- the one source that dismissed such rumors -- had it right all along.
So far, the best Wal-Mart has promised is that it will match other retailers on the cost. Best Buy is currently offering 8 GB and 16 GB editions of the smartphone for $190 and $290, respectively, and Wal-Mart promises that it will offer its customers the same deal (within the promotional period, of course).
