Apple Sells A Million iPhones In Three Days...Kinda

Apple claims to have sold a million of its new iPhones in three days, but that doesn't mean a million people now have one. The company recently put out a press release saying it had sold the millionth iPhone 3G. Noting the phone is on sale in 21 ... countries, CEO Steve Jobs said "It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world." (Source: apple.com ) However, that figure is somewhat misleading. Fortune magazine reports that Apple only counts its own sales when somebody hands over the money in an Apple store. But ... (view more)

Apple Sues Copycat Psystar

American company Psystar began selling a copy of Mac's PC for $399 in April and already Apple is ready to bite back for the infringement. Look-alikes are everywhere in today's consumer market. However, in the world of electronics, companies are much ... more careful than other industries about copyright. Although unable to handle normal software updates, Psystar's cloned tower is able to run the Leopard operating system (OS). (Source: arstechnica.com ) According to Apple Insider, Apple delayed its decision to file a lawsuit because it was only at the beginning of this month that Psystar began to ... (view more)

New Intel Chips Conserve Power, Offer Crisper Hi-Def Video Playback

Intel has gained the upper hand once again in its continuing battle with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) by launching a new line of chips specifically designed for laptop computers. Intel promises that its new batch of chips will have better ... graphics-enabling abilities and a longer battery life. Manufacturing chips that require less power and offer crisper high-definition video playback has proved to be a difficult balancing act for most processing companies in the past, especially since many new notebook computers are being released in smaller models. The new chips will be packaged as part of ... (view more)

Microsoft, Yahoo, and Icahn Continue to Bicker Long After We All Stopped Caring

They're at it again. Earlier this week, Microsoft, Icahn and Yahoo! all released competing statements about recent talks between the three parties. Another endless discussion in an endless fight for corporate control wouldn't rate coverage at this ... point, but in this case it's interesting to note that Microsoft and Icahn felt they needed to 'set the record straight. ' Did Yahoo! lie or just misinterpret the most recent events? You be the judge. On July 14, Yahoo released a statement rejecting the most recent offer from Microsoft to obtain the search component of Yahoo's business. According to ... (view more)

LG Chocolate 3 Piggybacks On iPhone Publicity Wave

Now that iPhone mania is sweeping the globe, LG has launched the Chocolate 3. It's not coincidental that the new Chocolate was released alongside the iPhone; if anything, it's a sneaky move on LG's part to ride the media and advertising wave set in ... motion by Apple. With all the hubub about the pros and cons of the new 3G, the Chocolate 3 is poised to get some of the limelight. The mp3 Chocolate phone is offered exclusively with Verizon wireless and connects to Rhapsody's subscription music service. Apple Leaves Nasty Aftertaste for iPhone Buyers

Apple's in-store activation scheme for the launch of the new iPhone seems to have backfired thanks to a software bug. The problem isn't with the phone itself -- as far as anyone can tell, they work exactly as advertised. Instead, the glitch lay in ... the servers used to activate the phone service. Apple brought in the scheme after fears people would buy phones and then sell them abroad, particularly in markets which don't yet have a licensed local carrier. To combat this, U.S. buyers have to get their phones activated in person. In most cases, this involves signing a minimum two-year service ... (view more)

Microsoft Resorts To Propaganda To Sell Vista

Since retiring Windows XP on June 30 of this year, Microsoft has been making a push to repair the reputation of Windows Vista while attempting to gain more support from small businesses. Eighteen months after Vista shipped, Microsoft finally ... confessed to what everyone already knew: Vista has problems. More accurately, as noted by Information Week, Microsoft is admitting that Vista had problems shortly after its release, but claims they've been fixed, so it's safe to switch to Vista now. It's not quite that simple though. A couple days ago Microsoft announced the launch of the Windows Vista ... (view more)

Google Steps Up GMail Security

Google has announced two new security measures for its Gmail service: a partnership with eBay and PayPal to reduce phishing attacks, and a tool to warn users if somebody may have illicitly accessed their mailbox. The firm has teamed up with the ... auction and money transfer sites because they are two of the most common targets for phishing, a technique where hackers send emails that appear to be from the company and include links to bogus sites in the hope of capturing user names and passwords. Gmail already highlights potentially suspicious emails with a red box and removes any links those ... (view more)

Google Bows To Privacy Pressure

There's been a surprising amount of buzz about a one-word change to Google's home page: 'privacy'. The company has added a link from the front page of the site to the various privacy policies for the first time. It ends a prolonged debate about ... whether or not Google was breaching state laws. The controversy arose in May when the New York Times pointed out that a 2003 California law requires commercial websites based in the state to clearly display a link to its privacy policies from its home page. At the time, Google argued that it had taken care of this with a link to 'About Google'; however ... (view more)

ARM Set to Clothesline Intel

It seems that Intel will soon find themselves displaced by new, low power, high-function chips pioneered by cell phone chip makers. The new generation of chips are lower cost and use half the power of Intel's own "low power" equivalents. How did ... this happen? For almost 30 years, Intel has focused on improving speed, ignoring the power consumption issue. Improving performance was everything. But in the same time period, the cell phone emerged and evolved. Cell phone chips were created using completely different design constraints. Battery life and cost were the driving requirements. Using less ... (view more)
